Ralph E. and Aury Todd's homebred The Tin Man held off a game Devine Wind and withstood an inquiry in Thursday's grade II American Handicap at Hollywood Park.Ridden by Mike Smith for trainer Richard Mandella, The Tin Man took over in the backstretch and continued to lead while being closely pursued by Devine Wind. Devine Wind rallied in deep stretch when The Tin Man came out slightly and rushed Devine Wind, prompting a stewards' inquiry. The order of finish did not change, however. The Tin Man, posting his fifth win in his ninth career start, completed the 1 1/8 miles on grass in 1:46 4/5. He returned $10.40, $5.60, and $3.00. Devine Wind, who finished a neck back, was worth $8.20 and $3.80 and Kappa King, the even-money favorite, won the photo for third and paid $2.20.A 4-year-old gelded son of Affirmed, The Tin Man previously won an allowance and two optional claimers this year before a third in the grade II San Francisco Breeders' Cup Handicap and a ninth in the Shoemaker Mile (gr. I). He has earned $268,100.(Chart, Equibase)
