The Pennsylvania State Horse Racing Commission has issued an advisory that erythropoietin, or EPO, and other blood-doping substances and procedures are not permitted in the state.

Ben Nolt, executive secretary of the commission, said the rule was already in place. The commission, he said, wanted to alert licensees at the state's four racetracks about the regulation, Nolt said.

Other states either have a regulation in place or are pursuing one. The Association of Racing Commissioners International recently made use and administration of EPO and related substances a prohibited practice.
