Keeneland officials announced Wednesday the track's fall meeting will feature 19 stakes races, including an opening weekend featuring six graded stakes races. The 19 stakes races--11 of which are graded--will be worth a total of $4,425,000. Racing begins Friday, Oct. 4 and continues through Saturday, Oct. 26.

Headlining Keeneland's fall stakes schedule will be the $500,000 Overbrook Spinster (gr. I) and the $600,000 Shadwell Keeneland Turf Mile (gr. IT) on Sunday, Oct. 6. Other stakes scheduled for opening weekend are the $500,000 WinStar Galaxy (gr. IIT), the $400,000 Walmac Int'l Alcibiades (gr. II) and the $75,000 Nureyev on Friday, Oct. 4; the $400,000 Lane's End Breeders' Futurity (gr. II), the $250,000 Phoenix Breeders' Cup (gr. III), and the $75,000 A.P. Indy on Saturday, Oct. 5; and the $150,000 Sycamore Breeders' Cup and $75,000 Storm Cat stakes on Sunday, Oct. 6.

The opening weekend races are traditional prep races for the Breeders' Cup World Thoroughbred Championships. Nine winners of the Breeders' Cup Distaff (gr. I) made their previous start in the Spinster, while the WinStar Galaxy firmly established itself as a stepping stone to the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf (gr. IT) when Tout Charmant and Perfect Sting finished first and second, respectively, in the 2000 running.

The Walmac Int'l Alcibiades and the Lane's End Breeders' Futurity each has each sent four starters to victory in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (gr. I) and the Breeders' Cup Juvenile (gr. I), respectively.

Other major stakes races scheduled for the fall meeting include the $500,000 Queen Elizabeth Challenge Cup (gr. IT) on Saturday, Oct.12; the $100,000 Valley View (gr. III) on Saturday, Oct.19; the $125,000 Thoroughbred Club of America (gr. III) on Sunday, Oct. 20, and the $150,000 Fayette Stakes (gr. III) on closing day, Oct. 26.

In December, the American Stakes Committee upgraded the Shadwell Keeneland Turf Mile from a grade II to a grade I race. The Raven Run received its first graded status and will run as a grade III event.

Keeneland has increased the purses on three stakes races a total of $175,000. The largest increase--$500,000 to $600,000--went to the Shadwell Keeneland Turf Mile. The Raven Run increased from $100,000 to $150,000, and the Thoroughbred Club of America increased from $100,000 to $125,000.

The conditions of the Storm Cat have changed to one mile on the turf for horses 3 years old and up.
