Mike's Wildcat beat Beautiful Treasure by eight lengths Sunday to win the $109,700 Astoria Stakes for two-year-old fillies at Belmont Park. Under Jose Santos, Mike's Wildcat ran away from her seven rivals to the victory.
"They told me she was fast and they were right," said Santos. "She was just cruising along out there, with her ears up. I knew it was over at the three-eighths pole. She basically galloped through the stretch."
Collymore Hall, the odds-on choice, was another 2 1/4 lengths behind Beautiful Treasure.
"Maybe from a sharpness standpoint she needed this race having missed some time," said Todd Pletcher, who trains Collymore Hall. "She got outrun today and had no excuse in the running of the race. I just hope this race moves her forward."
Milliondollarlady, Flame Tetra, Heart Ofa Champion, Stay, and Boston Storm completed the order of finish.
Mike's Wildcat (Forest Wildcat--Old Flame, by Black Tie Affair) raced 5 1/2 furlongs in 1:03.99 on the fast track to earn $65,820 for Dennis Narlinger. It was the second straight win in three career starts for the Jeff Bonde-trained filly, who bypassed allowance company to jump from the maiden ranks to stakes competition. Don Mattox bred the winner in Kentucky.
Mike's Wildcat returned $30.40, $12.20, and $4.30. Beautiful Treasure paid $6.10 and $3.00, and Collymore Hall $2.30. The winning exacta combination was worth $121. (Chart, Equibase
