Robert F. "Bob" Carey, Jr., assistant to the president of Hawthorne Racecourse, died Saturday from injuries sustained in a fall last November.

Carey, 67, died at his home in Riverside, Illinois. Funeral arrangements are pending.

According to a statement from the track, Carey oversaw backstretch and on-track operations "with a hands-on approach.

"Uncle Bob," as he was known by many Hawthorne employees, dealt with the horsemen on a daily basis and was also responsible for revamping Hawthorne's turf course in 1995.
