Robert F. Carey Jr., who served as assistant to the president at Hawthorne, died after a long battle from injuries that occurred in a fall last November. Carey, 67, died at his home in Riverside, Ill.
Carey, whose father served as managing director of Hawthorne for more than 30 years, handled all matters around the track with a hands-on approach, as his primary duties were to oversee operations of the backstretch and on the track itself. Uncle Bob, as he was affectionately known by many employees, dealt with the horsemen on a daily basis and also was responsible for revamping Hawthorne's turf course in 1995.
Carey is survived by his wife, Peg, nine children, and 22 grandchildren.
