Australian Mixed Sale Ends With Record Gross

The June weanling and Thoroughbred sale ended in Australia on Wednesday with record gross revenue of $5,853,750 (approximately $3,346,062 in U.S. funds). The 667 horses sold averaged $8,776 ($5,016). It was the largest bloodstock auction ever conducted in Victoria.

"The sheer size of this year's catalogue was always going to ensure a rise in gross on last year's total of $5,050,350, but to be up by 15% (actually 15.9%) is a fabulous result," said Peter Heagney, associated director of William Inglis & Son, which conducted the auction. The average price remained on par with last year and the solid clearance rate of 81% is a clear indication of the healthy state of the Victorian bloodstock industry."

The top price for the final session was the $100,000 ($57,161) brought by group I producer Desert Orchid. Dermot Farrington purchased the mare from Woodbyne Pty. Ltd. A daughter of Western Symphony, she is the dam of top class sprinter and dual group I winner Desert Sky. She is in foal to Desert Sky's sire, Hurricane Sky.
