High Chaparral Leads Irish Derby Field

High Chaparrel is one of six horses from the stable of Aidan O'Brien among 11 five-day declarations for Sunday's Budweiser Irish Derby (Ire-I).

The Vodafone Derby (Eng-II) hero will be bidding to emulate his former stable companion Galileo who followed up his Epsom triumph 12 months ago in the Curragh classic.

O'Brien has listed Vodafone runner-up Hawk Wing as possible. Ballingarry, Della Francesca, Roar Of The Tiger, and Sholokov complete the O'Brien sextet.

Trainer Dermot Weld has entered In Time's Eye, who was runner-up to High Chaparral in the Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial at Leopardstown on his latest start, and Jazz Beat.

Balakheri, winner of the King Edward VII Stakes at Royal Ascot last Friday, is one of two horses left in by Sir Michael Stoute. The Newmarket trainer, who has won the Irish Derby three times with Shergar (1981), Shareef Dancer (1983) and Shahrastani (1986), could also run Princely Venture.

Completing the 11 is a third English probable, Nysaean, trained by Richard Hannon. There is no French-trained representative as Prix du Jockey Club runner-up Act One has been retired after sustaining a leg injury.
