Hula Wonder Tops Second Session of Australian Sale

Hula Wonder, a group III-winning mare, brought $130,000 (approximately $74,309 in U.S. funds) to top the second session of the June mixed sale at Oaklands in Victoria, Australia, on Tuesday. Sydney-based Les Young of Doncaster Bloodstock purchased her from Little Plains Stud, agent. A daughter of Hula Chief out of the stakes winner Natural Wonder, Hula Wonder has captured 13 races and earned nearly $400,000 ($228,644).

In all, 188 mares were sold today for a gross of $2,693,850 ($1,589,831) and an average price of $14,328 ($8,254). The overall aggregate for the sale climbed to $4,276,600 ($2,444,547), with a further day of selling scheduled for Wednesday.

The auction is being conducted by William Inglis & Son.

During the opening session on Sunday, 265 weanlings sold for a sale record gross of $1,582,750 ($904,716), and an average price of $5,973 ($3,414). The record number of weanlings on offer were well received by buyers, achieving an enviable clearance rate of 84%.

A bay colt by Flying Spur from the Sir Tristram mare Trist a Girl, topped the session when he brought a $57,500 ($32,868) bid from Darren Weir. The colt was consigned by Tabasco Lodge, agent, and comes from the family that has produced champion sires Zabeel and Carnegie (IRE).
