Prairie Slam, a 2-year-old colt by Grand Slam consigned by Ciaran Dunne's Wavertree Stables, Inc. was sold to Frank Calabrese for $180,000 to top the second and final session of the Ocala Breeders' Sales Company's June Sale of 2-Year-Olds in Training and Horses of Racing Age. The chestnut colt, whose quarter mile in :21 3/5 was the fastest breeze at the distance at Sunday's Under Tack workout session, is out of Turk's Flirt (Turkoman), a half sister to grade I winner Roanoke.
OBSC reported a total of 241 juveniles brought a total of $4,569,500, compared with 226 grossing $3,809,700 in 2001. The average price was a June sale record of $18,961, up 12.5% from last year's record $16,857 average. The median price was $9,700 compared with $9,750 in 2001. The buyback percentage was 23.7%, down from 30.6% last year.
