Apprentice jockey Kris Prather suffered a fractured pelvis at Churchill Downs Saturday when he mount apparently wheeled and kicked her while she was removing her saddle following the fifth race.

Churchill Downs physician Dr. Bayard Rice said Prather complained of pain in her left side and left arm. She was taken by ambulance to Caritas Medical Center, where she was diagnosed, and will undergo treatment at Jewish Hospital under the care of Dr. Raymond Shea.

Prather's career has been plagued by injuries. The 23-year-old rider, a finalist for the 2001 Eclipse Award for apprentice jockeys, missed about eight months of last year. She suffered injuries on Mar. 17, 2001 and again on June 15 of that year, just nine days after returning from the previous injury. She returned from the latter injury – to her left shoulder – in September and rode for two weeks before taking off until Dec. 31 due to recurring problems with the shoulder.
