Della Francesca, one of 10 horses nominated to the American Triple Crown this year by trainer Aidan O'Brien, posted his first stakes triumph Wednesday when he won the Gallinule Stakes (Ire-III) at Leopardstown.
Ridden by M. J. Kinane, the 3-year-old son of Danzig completed the 1 1/4 miles over soft turf in 2:12.5 as he defeated 5-year-old Jammaal (by Robellino) by a half-length.
Racing for Michael Tabor, Della Francesca has won two of seven career starts. The colt, bred in Pennsylvania by Brushwood Stable, previously finished second in the Macau Jockey Club Craven Stakes and Somerville Tattersalls Stakes, both English group III events, and was thid in the Entenmanns Irish Two Thousand Guineas.
Produced from the Affirmed mare La Affirmed, Della Francesca is a half-brother to group/grade III winners Caress (by Storm Cat), Bernstein (by Storm Cat), and Country Cat (by Storm Cat).
