Sheikh Mohammed Creates Backstretch Buzz

Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum, who with other members of his family operates Godolphin Racing, created a buzz on the backstretch at Churchill Downs Friday.
Godolphin is seeking its first Kentucky Derby triumph with Express Tour. With a strong contingent of horses running in England on Saturday, it was uncertain whether Mohammed would be at Churchill Downs. Mohammed and entourage arrived Thursday in a jet that passed over the racetrack on its approach to the Louisville airport.
"It is a pleasure to be back," Mohammed told a large group of reporters as staff doled out Godolphin shirts, jackets, and caps. Noting his quest to win the Derby, Mohammed said, "Watch for us, we are coming. If not this year, then next year."
Trainer Saeed bin Suroor said Godolphin believes Express Tour offers the stable its best chance yet to win the Derby. He said Godolphin was disappointed that Street Cry was injured leading up to the Derby and will not be able to run.
Godolphin racing manager Simon Crisford said too much should not be read into the decision by Sheikh Mohammed to be in Kentucky rather than England.
"This is the biggest race in America and he wants to be here," Crisford said.
