The Bedouins of old, we are told, were meticulous in their record-keeping as it pertained to the breeding and pedigrees of their Arabian horses. They also were zealous in guarding this information, because of fear that if it became known that a famous mare, for example, was in a particular camp, she might become a target for horse thieves. Sometimes the pedigree was carried in an amulet suspended by a cord around the owner's neck. Sometimes it was merely recorded by memory with the information being passed on to other family members.

Horse breeders of today do not have those same concerns about thievery, and they also have an almost unlimited capability for recording information that involves much more than a particular horse's pedigree. Computer technology, with new software being developed on a regular and rapid basis, makes it possible to record and track everything on a farm from breeding information to vaccination schedules, and from customer profiles to almost automatic invoicing.

The continuing advances in computer software also have been a boon for veterinarians. Gone are the days when notes were made during a farm visit and later were transferred to a ledger or notebook. Today's veterinarians can make use of computer notebooks, tablet PCs, and laptops while making calls on their cell phones. By the time they leave a particular farm, all of the needed information will have been noted, recorded, and stored, which is a huge benefit to the veterinarian and the farm.

These advanced techniques are also valuable for individual farms' resident veterinarians.
